There are about 40,000 bacteria in the mouth of a human being. Not all of them are good for your health. The harmful bacteria lurk in between the teeth and cling to the gums. The majority of bad guys have a ball right on the surface of the tongue because the venue is big, warm, and has plenty of food.

The surface of the tongue is covered with minute projections (papillae), which give it a furred appearance. There are also numerous tiny grooves running across the surface. That is where bacteria huddle in large numbers. Bacteria feed on leftovers and dead cells. The harmful microorganisms attack teeth and gums and produce a typical foul smell, rotten egg-smelling gases or dragon mouth. The findings of several studies show that oral debris on the tongue is the root cause of bad breath in 85% of all cases.

Focus on the heart of the matter: run your tongue scraper from the root toward the tip of the tongue. The beasts are thought to behave themselves during the daytime since the majority of them are washed away by saliva rich in acids and oxygen. But things get ugly after dark. The decay process intensifies dramatically since the secretion of saliva drops by 50 times at night. That is why your mouth smells like a pigsty in the morning.

Some doctors recommend that you drink a glass of water right after waking up. They also advise that you take a closer look in your mouth at a regular basis. Those bastards tend to multiply like crazy in no time. The harmful bacteria are easy to see with the naked eye. Your tongue looks coated, especially at the root. Bacteria never accumulate on the front part of the tongue, which is always in contact with the palate.

You are strongly recommended to brush your tongue once you brushed your teeth. The cleansing of the tongue is required for removing bacteria, mucus and microscopic leftovers. It would be ideal if you could clean your tongue in the morning, at night and preferable after meals every day. Well, it is easier than it seems. Give it a try.

A regular toothbrush, preferably a soft one, would do the trick. Apply a few circular movements on the tongue, and dislodge the debris by sweeping it off. Do not put too much pressure while running your toothbrush. The tongue’s tissues are quite vulnerable. At the beginning you can feel like dropping your cookies around the place, especially if you are a smoker. But your system is likely to get used to mechanical tongue brushing in a short while. You can gradually start using toothpaste for brushing your tongue.

Alternatively, you can purchase a special brush for tongue cleansing. The shape of it is more rounded, and its bristles are short and soft. It often comes with a tube of antibacterial gel, which should be used like common toothpaste. Rinse your mouth after brushing the tongue. Refrain from eating for 10 minutes so that the environment of oral cavity may be kept intact.

A special spoon for tongue cleansing is equally effective. It can be purchased in a drugstore. A common teaspoon is another option. Scraping should be done in a regular fashion, from the root toward the tip of the tongue.

The following berry and herb infusions are good for rinsing the mouth after a tongue cleansing session: raspberry, plantain, nettle, and dandelion. I'M A music teacher. One day I had an eight-year-old come in for her first lesson. She dressed as if she was in the movie Disney Princesses and she had a smile that melted my heart.

I smiled back and beckoned her to sit next to me on the piano bench.

She sat and I patted her before asking for her name. But the minute she opened her little mouth, I felt like a stink bomb had been released. I thought, Dear me, this little angel has halitosis?

It wasn't a happy thought because I would have to coach her to sing and play her first do-re-mi over the next hour.

This was one occupational hazard I didn't quite expect from teaching. I had imagined that I would have to nag, Practice makes perfect" unendingly; little did I realise that my nose would have to put up with such abuse.

As a teacher, I meet kids from all ages, shapes and sizes and, believe me, they come in a variety of smells too. Olfactory repulsion comes in all forms bad breath, sweaty armpits, oily scalps, BO and, woe betide, flatulence!

I once asked, Gee, what's that sound and smell? and the student coolly replied, My fragrant fart!
Occasionally, the smell of dead rodent can be traced to a harmless-looking bag that has never known what detergent meant.

Often I have to stand close to a student's head, and if it stinks, I try to ask as casually possible, Bathe already or not?(after the customary Eat already?, only to begat this: Whole day got tuition, computer lesson, then piano lesson, where got time to bathe?

I then nod sympathetically and start to breathe through my mouth.

On hot days, a student might walk in smelling like a skunk. But though their armpits may reek of bottled sweat and their heads may stink like fermented Chinese cabbage, I cannot bring myself to tell them so. I can only hope that wearing a nose mask will soon become the next big fashion statement.

Some students do have good personal hygiene but this is little help when their growing bodies go haywire. I can't fault biological changes since I was once a teenager too.

I have tried to combat the odours with room fragrance but the smell of so-called "forest breeze" is as fake as plastic fir.

By the end of the day, my nose would get so confused it could no longer distinguish between the smell of a grilled sirloin and puppy poo.

Since I'm sensitivity to how others smell, I take great responsibility to ensure that I myself smell pleasant. Once known as the Durian Queen, I have now abstained from that thorny delight. Even my favourite sambal petai has had to be dropped from my diet.

Incidentally, my worst nightmare came about one day when my daughter, returning from school, gave me a peck. I caught a whiff of something that made me behave like an airport search dog, sniffing and snorting all over her.

Oh no! You've got bad breath! I looked for her water bottle and, to my chagrin, found it was still full. I asked, Why didn't you drink your water?

Mum, water makes me wanna pee! I hate the school toilet. It stinks!

But now your mouth stinks!

Thanks to her, I am learning to accept that unpleasant smells are a part of growing up.

Nowadays, I ask that my students to drink lots of water in class, get them to wash their hands and face if they have come in from the sun. And of course, there's a bowl of peppermint sweets at the counter.

So dear kids, now that the cat's out of the bag, please do your teacher a favour.

It sounds like a crazy headline doesn't it. Well imagine my suprise when I read the article below. I found it yesterday as story from the Manila Standard Today. Wow! I wonder if celebrities hear would go for such?

The point is that Listerine has shown to be a great money maker for it creator, but not such a great product to fight bad breath. I guess the only way to keep pushing it is to use celebrities!

Celebrities need mouthwash daily

A celebrity with bad breath… that’s a big turn off. So, celebrities should be conscious of how they smell.

Sports idol-turned commercial endorser Vince Hizon and his sportscaster/wife, Patricia Bermudez, television host Paolo Abrera and theater actress/VJ Karel Marquez have one thing in common: They have all been using Listerine for their daily oral hygiene. And because they trust Listerine, they have all agreed to be part of Listerine’s ‘‘Mission to Mouth.’’

Paolo quips: “It is very important to feel good all the time. The key word is confidence. If you are not confident it sort of shows on the outside.”

Karel agrees: “As celebrities, we are always in the public eye. Reporters hound us for interviews. People look up to us as role models—myself being a theater actress and a VJ, image is very, very important.’’

“And we need to protect our image by staying healthy and fit. One lapse and we’re out of the biz. You probably wouldn’t write good articles about a celebrity with bad breath. That’s a matter best taken up in the blind items,” adds Paolo.

To Vince, however, proper oral hygiene is more than just a matter of image. “Being healthy means looking good outside and feeling great inside. Oral hygiene should not be neglected, since poor oral health may lead to other diseases. The best way of preventing plaque, gingivitis and bad breath is to have a good defense. With complete oral hygiene regimen, which includes a strong and effective mouthwash, you’ve got things covered.”

Patricia connects the importance of the Listerine habit to her family: “ Since Vince and I already have a kid, we are very conscious of our hygiene. We want our kid to take after us in terms of proper hygiene.”

Patricia’s comments were validated by Dr. Jesus Randy Canal, Southeast Asia-Medical/research and development area manager of Pfizer’s consumer healthcare department, who said: “We want to inculcate in consumers the habit of using a mouthwash and make it a part of their daily oral care regimen.”

I used to think that brushing was enough to maintain good oral hygiene. I know now that brushing alone is not enough to eliminate mouth germs. I joined this mission to educate others who might still be in my previous mindset that brushing alone is enough. It is not.”

Bad Morning breath? 5 Foods Can Fight a Foul Mouth

It's something we all think about and probably all worry about but nobody likes to talk about it – bad breath. These days the number of breath fresheners in check out lines practically outweigh the number of candy bars, but we all know that mints and gums just cover up bad breath, and they don't last long. But, what you eat can make a big difference – and I'm not just talking about avoiding garlic. I've got 5 foods that are both good for you and your breath:

1) Yogurt. Bad breath is caused mostly by bacteria and a recent study found that eating one serving of yogurt with live active cultures reduced the amount of bacteria in the mouth. It also reduced plaque and gum disease.

2) Apples, especially tart ones like Granny Smiths. If you've ever bitten into an apple, you know how it makes your mouth water. When those juices are flowing, food particles and bacteria are washed away!

3) Red peppers and

4) citrus fruits – both are high in vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. Vitamin C creates an environment that doesn't allow bacteria to grow and it keeps gums healthy.

5) And finally, fresh herbs. Instead of gum, chew on a sprig of fresh mint or parsley. They're a lot more potent than mint flavored gum and they're loaded with disease fighting compounds.
