Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Is your Toothpaste a health problem waiting to happen?

By Peter Bolton

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a substance found in most toothpastes we use to keep our teeth clean. While the evidence is insufficient to present a robust case for removing this substance from toothpaste there's enough evidence available to suggest it can be responsibile for some tissue damage to our mouths and gums. This damage can lead to canker sores, mouth ulcers and in some cases bad breath.

What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS is to all intents and purposes an industrial detergent that's commonly found in cleaning products. It's the same substance that is found in products such as engine degreasers and is responsible for creating the foamy texture that aids teeth cleaning. It may also increase aborbency of other chemicals which also can lead to other medial complications. You will find SLS is almost every kind of toothpaste in stores.

Alternatives to SLS

Because of these health issues there are at present a number of SLS Free Toothpaste alternatives available from makers such as Cleure, CloSYS and Doctor. Collins to name just a few. Many of these same types of toothpase are also flouride free and are comprised of basically organic ingredients like Tea Tree Oil and Magnolia Bark Extract.

Flouride a Benefit or a Danger?

Most of us aware that popular toothpaste brands also contain Flouride. Flouride is well known to aid the whitening of teeth and remove plaque. Many people however are unware that Flouride is a damaging chemical that can essentially promote tooth decay if used excessively. There are studies available that document the dangerous impact of Flouride on children if used too regularly and Flouride can also enter the bloodstream which can also have health connotations.

Natural Toothpaste

You may typically find it more difficult to find Flouride and SLS Free Toothpaste however be assured if you research online you'll find a substantial number of manufacturers and the number is increasing as the proof mounts that both SLS and Flouride may in reality cause more Problems than they help combat.
